Learning Biology definitions without cramming the night before

Biology asks you to hold a great many precise terms in your head, and to reproduce them accurately. Students respond by leaving it all to the last two nights and cramming.
Cramming does work, briefly. It is very good at getting information to survive until tomorrow morning and very bad at anything beyond that. Since most of what you learn in Class 9 is still examinable in Class 10, and everything from Class 11 returns in Class 12, that is a poor trade.
Space the same material out
The single most useful change is unglamorous: review each topic several times, days apart, instead of many times in one night.
A workable pattern is: learn it today, review tomorrow, again in three days, again in a week, again in a month. Each review takes a few minutes because you are refreshing rather than relearning.
The counter-intuitive part is that the forgetting between reviews is doing useful work. Reviewing something you have half-forgotten strengthens it far more than reviewing something still fresh. That is why five minutes tomorrow beats another twenty minutes tonight.
Understand the mechanism, then the words
Biology definitions are not arbitrary strings. Almost every term describes a process, and the words were chosen to describe it.
Before memorising a definition, make sure you can explain what is physically happening, in your own words, badly. Once you can, the formal wording becomes a label for something you already understand — and labels are far easier to hold than free-floating sentences.
If you cannot explain the process in plain Urdu or English, memorising the sentence will get you through recognition questions and fail you on anything that asks you to apply it.
Use the word parts
A large share of biological vocabulary is built from a small set of fragments. Hypo- is under, hyper- is over, -lysis is splitting, photo- is light, -genesis is origin.
Learn thirty of these and hundreds of terms stop being arbitrary. You will also make a decent guess at an unfamiliar term in an exam, which is not nothing.
Draw the diagrams from memory
For anything with structure — a cell, a heart, a leaf cross-section, a cycle — draw it blank, from memory, and label it. Then check.
This is retrieval practice with the useful property that you can see exactly what you omitted. The label you cannot produce is the label you do not know, and no amount of looking at a printed diagram will tell you which one that is.
Write the definition, do not recognise it
Test yourself by writing the definition, not by reading it and thinking "yes, that one".
Precision matters in Biology marking, and the gap between "I know roughly what osmosis is" and being able to write it correctly under time pressure is exactly the gap that costs marks. The only way to find that gap is to try to write it and compare.
Start earlier than feels necessary
Five minutes a day from the start of the chapter, rather than four hours the night before the test, is less total time and produces a better result.
The catch is that it requires starting when the exam feels far away and the pressure is absent. That is the whole difficulty — not the method, which is simple.
